Kevin

Kevin and younger daughter Faith

Known Since: 1986

Resides In: Carmichael, CA

I met Kevin through K.C., and through Kevin, many of my best friends today--Jon, Greg, Bryan, Mark, A.T., Chris, Scott, Ken. The first night we met we started talking about just all kinds of stuff, and ended up talking for a couple of hours. Kevin, I found out immediately, can talk for days. He's an endless well of energy and ideas. We started out hanging out with him, Greg, Tim and I (Tim was the only one with the car at that point, too), and we'd all hang out at my house, get drunk, and drive to record stores with no money to buy anything. We'd listen to Depeche Mode and Beastie Boys, and talk about everything from music to movies to life--or as much as we knew about life in our late teens. I started smoking at a party at Kevin's, as a matter of fact, thanks to a pack of Dunhills he'd left on his desk. Yeah, thanks much for that, dude. We were both trying to be writers, and would talk about ideas and crank out our stuff. Kevin would often drop by on the scooter he eventually got and hang out 'till all hours.

For a time, Kevin was gone when he joined the Army. Then he was back, and had crappy little apartments in Carmichael and downtown Sacramento where we'd hang out, where Kevin would obsess on George Michael and Terrence Trent D'Arby music and talk about wanting to be a pop star himself. Soon, though, he joined the Marines, and just like when he was in the Army, we'd write huge letters back and forth, talking about music and politics. He eventually came back after some time in the Gulf War, and ended up married soon after. His marriage ended after a few years and Kevin found himself a single dad...and a police officer. His love for writing wouldn't go away, and after he finished his Bachelor's Degree (while being a working single father, I should add), he was accepted to grad school in their writing program, the only one of us to ever really accomplish anything with his writing (so far...).

I often described Kevin as being a fictional character. Bigger than life, he always seemed to be getting into situations that were highly unlikely--dating strippers, traveling the world, etc. Kevin's always been the consummate ladies man, even when he's not trying, and has a string of interesting relationship stories. Kevin reads everything and keeps up on the news and world events, along with obscure novels. Sarcastic, and with the attention span of the average housefly, Kevin's a great friend, a great writer, and a great father...of one daughter, I'm proud to say, that I became godfather of.

Random Me and Kevin Memory: His last night before the Army, after one of the quintessential Mission Park nights, he had to drive Jon home on his scooter as the sun came up...drunk. He made it all the way back to the Donut shop, and I watched as he pulled up, parked...and then fell over.
